Why you need an eye examination
Regular eye examinations are important because your eyes don’t usually hurt when something is wrong!
An Optometrist examining your eyes is an essential health check that can pick up early signs of eye conditions before you’re aware of any symptoms (many of which can be treated if found early.)
As well as being a good all round eye health check, an eye examination will detect if you need any corrective eye wear and pick up any changes to your current eye wear.
Some health conditions can affect the eyes such as: diabetes, macular degeneration or glaucoma
We recommend that most people should have their eyes looked at every two years but there are also reasons for more regular eye examinations, for example if you:
- are a child wearing glasses
- have diabetes
- are aged 40 or over and have a family history of glaucoma
are aged 70 or over
The way a sight test is carried out is governed by law. A sight test will identify:
what your level of vision is and whether you need glasses to correct your sight.
Your eyes and the area around them will be examined, to look for signs of injury, disease or abnormality.
At the end of your sight test, your Optometrist will discuss any further action required and when you should have your next appointment.

A Dispensing Opticians will interpret the prescription and help choose the most suitable frame and lens combination to achive the vision desired. Our use of qualified Dispensing Opticians means the person advising you has a good, certified knowledge of your eyes, your eye health and is current on new guidelines and advancements in eyewear/eyecare through continued education.
Remember that children under 16 and individuals who are registered blind or partially sighted can only have their appliances dispensed by or under the supervision of a registered medical practitioner, registered Optometrist or registered dispensing optician – its worth checking a practice employees qualified individuals to benefit from the additional confidence and knowledge that brings to your experience.
