Feel Better by Tackling Dry Eyes – Clare & Illingworth’s Dedicated Dry‑Eye Clinic

If you often feel like there’s grit in your eyes, or they burn, water excessively or feel tired by the end of the day, you’re not alone. Up to one in five people over 40 report moderate to severe dry‑eye symptoms. The condition is particularly common in women and becomes more likely with age, but modern lifestyles – spending long hours on screens, working in air‑conditioned environments or taking certain medications – can trigger symptoms at any age.

Why do my eyes feel like this?

Dry eye happens when your tears aren’t able to lubricate the surface of the eye properly. Tear production naturally declines as we get older, and hormonal changes, medical conditions or medicines such as antihistamines and antidepressants can aggravate the problem. Environmental factors like low humidity, poor sleep and heavy screen use also play a big role. Left untreated, dry eye can lead to ongoing inflammation and damage to the ocular surface, making reading, driving or enjoying the outdoors uncomfortable.

How Clare & Illingworth can help

At Clare & Illingworth, we run a private dry‑eye clinic in a calm first‑floor space dedicated solely to treating this condition. You do not need to be a patient of our opticians to book an appointment; we welcome anyone seeking relief from uncomfortable eyes.

Our 75‑minute Dry‑Eye Consultation with a specialist optometrist costs £150 and includes:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: We measure your tear‑film quality, gland function and ocular surface health to determine the type and severity of dry eye.

  • 10‑minute lid massage with a therapeutic visor: Using a heated visor (not a person) we gently warm and massage the eyelids to soften hardened oils and unblock the meibomian glands. This is followed by a cleansing treatment to clear any blockages around the eye area, setting the stage for healthier tear flow.

  • Personalised Treatment Plan: Based on your results and lifestyle, we’ll advise on home routines, in‑clinic therapies, prescription products or dietary changes to provide lasting relief

I’ve been suffering with dry eyes for six months now and I’ve tried everything. Preservative free eye drops. Warm compress, diet, hydration and regular visits to the opticians but they just conform they’re dry and don’t offer any treatment.

    • Hello Helen,
The IDRA device allows us to give you more detail about your dry eye disease and advice as to how to manage it. It is a chronic condition so it won’t go away but often we find people are not on the right drops for them and haven’t had it all explained to them as well as needed – purely because its not part of the standard eye examination and not every Opticians has the technology we have invested in. Would be great to see you in the clinic to go through how we can help manage this with you. Hope this helps. Richard
